It’s not everyday that a wee-bitty film from a ragtag crew of filmmakers gets screened on the legendary Leicester Square cinema scene. Especially a film 'starring' two consummate nobodies. Add to that the fact that the film is an improvisational investigation (i.e., script-less) that trudges mud all over that fine line between fact and fiction. Celebrity-free, genre-obliterating, experimental - emphasis on the mental = a package difficult to sell to even the most adventurous of buyers.
Given these odds, we decided early on that we would distribute this film ourselves, no matter how it turned out. With no investors, we weren't accountable to anyone. So our decision to self-distribute meant we were free from all prerequisite probes of mainstream marketability.
Luckily, the palpable chemistry of our two leading characters, Boerlieder and Monihan, and the countless hours of a nimble, ridiculously hard working crew, delivered a delightfully watchable final product. This has made this process of getting eyeballs on the film a tad easier.
We will be writing a longer entry about our journey through self-distribution once we complete the cycle, but one pivotal early observation we can share is that there really are no rules to the game. There are no set paths or formulas you have to follow. The only constant is that no matter what angle you take, you will need to connect with generous people who will champion the work and help open doors, be they front, side, back, secret, trap or otherwise.
So, to those who have believed in this film and helped bring it to audiences across the UK, US, Spain, Greece and Canada (so far) massive sloppy hugs and kisses!! Jaime Marie Davis, Courtney Sheehan, Jonathan Marlow, Yorgos Krassakopoulos, Juanjo M. Fuentes, Kweighbaye Kotee, Joseph Willwerth, and Sarah El Ouazzani, we love you.
More screenings to come!
